Loyola elects seven new board of trustee members

Loyola University New Orleans board of trustees elected seven new members for the term that began Aug. 1, 2010. They are: the Rev. R. Bentley Anderson, S.J.; Virginia Angelico-Tatum ’75, D.D.S.; Robert “Bob” Brown; Anne Gauthier; Sean O’Keefe ’77; the Rev. Richard P. Salmi, S.J.; and the Rev. Stephen Sauer, S.J.
Officers for the 2010 –11 board are Suzanne T. Mestayer, chair; J. Kevin Poorman, vice chair; the Rev. Kevin Wm. Wildes, S.J., Ph.D., university president; the Rev. Peter Rogers, S.J., Ph.D., vice president; and the Rev. Lawrence W. Moore, S.J., LL.M., secretary treasurer.
The Rev. R. Bentley Anderson, S.J., Ph.D., is associate professor in the department of African and African-American Studies at Fordham University. A native of New Orleans, Anderson was raised in Atlanta, Ga. He joined the New Orleans Province of the Society of Jesus in 1986 after having served as a Signal Corps officer in the United States Army from 1981—1986. He left active duty with the rank of captain. His Jesuit studies were conducted in New Orleans at Loyola and in Toronto at Regis College. Anderson was awarded a doctorate in history from Boston College in 2001. From 2001–2010, he was a member of the faculty at Saint Louis University. His area of research concerns issues of race and religion in the United States, South Africa and Zimbabwe in the 20th century. He has been published in the Catholic Historical Review, the Journal of Church & State and the Journal of American Ethnic History. His book “Black, White and Catholic: New Orleans Interracialism, 1947-1956,” was published by Vanderbilt University Press in 2005.
Virginia Angelico-Tatum, D.D.S., has been practicing dentistry for more than 30 years and has operated a general dental practice in Hattiesburg, Miss., for the past 10 years. She is a member of the Louisiana Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and is active in the New Orleans Dental Association and the New Orleans Dental Conference. A New Orleans native, Angelico-Tatum received her Bachelor of Science degree in dental hygiene from Loyola University New Orleans in 1975. She then graduated from the Louisiana State University School of Dentistry in 1979. She served as a clinical instructor for the Pearl River Community College School of Dental Hygiene for two years before opening her practice in Hattiesburg. In 2009, she was named alumnus of the year by the LSU School of Dentistry. She is a member-at-large of the LSU Health Sciences Center Foundation’s board of directors, as well as a member of the LSU School of Dentistry Alumni Association’s board of directors. In 2007, she served on the host committee for Loyola’s dental alumni reception and is also a current member of Loyola’s College of Humanities and Natural Sciences Visiting Committee and a member of the Heritage Society.
Robert “Bob” Brown is managing director of the Business Council of New Orleans and the River Region, an organization comprised of the CEOs of many of the largest corporations in the greater New Orleans area. The Business Council works to implement clear, predictable laws that foster honest, efficient, transparent and accountable government. Previously, his long career at the University of New Orleans culminated in his service from 2003–2007 as vice chancellor for governmental, community and diversity affairs. Prior to that, he served in the United States Air Force as an air traffic controller and rose to the rank of master sergeant in less than 13 years. Brown graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history in 1975 from Park College in Parkville, Mo., and received a Master of Arts degree in human resource management in 1979 from Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif. He currently serves on numerous boards, including the board of supervisors for the Louisiana Community and Technical College System, Council for a Better Louisiana, the Bureau of Governmental Research, and the YMCA of Greater New Orleans. He has been honored with a Role Model award from the Young Leadership Council and was selected as a Community Hero/Olympic Torch Bearer for the 1996 Olympics. In 2007, he was awarded the Times-Picayune Loving Cup for outstanding community service.
Anne B. Gauthier serves as a trustee of the Wendell & Anne Gauthier Family Foundation, a philanthropic organization that gives in the areas of music, visual arts and Catholic education, including generous donations to Loyola University New Orleans. Gauthier earned her bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Southwestern Louisiana and is a former teacher in the New Orleans and Jefferson parish school systems. She is a member of the New Orleans Museum of Art’s board of trustees, a past president of the Cancer Crusaders of New Orleans, and a current member of Loyola’s Music and Fine Arts Visiting Committee. She is active with the Preservation Resource Center, the New Orleans Opera Association, and the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. Anne’s late husband, Wendell Gauthier, J.D. ’70, was a graduate of the Loyola College of Law and best known as one of the nation’s most creative and effective personal injury lawyers. He successfully represented victims of industrial disasters and those harmed by large corporations, notably in the tobacco industry. The Gauthier Family Foundation funds the Peter J. Castano Endowed Scholarship and the Wendell Gauthier-Michael X. St. Martin Eminent Scholar and Chair in Environmental Law at the Loyola College of Law. It also funded the Wendell H. and Anne B. Gauthier Family Wing of the law college’s building, a four-story, 16,000-square-foot addition dedicated in 2007.
Sean O’Keefe ’77, was appointed CEO of EADS North America in 2009. EADS is the parent company of some of the most recognized international defense and aerospace units, including Airbus, Eurocopter, Astrium and Defense and Security. EADS had annual revenues in 2008 of more than $63 billion and employs some 118,000 people worldwide. Prior to joining EADS, O’Keefe served as corporate officer of the General Electric Company aviation business. He was chancellor of Louisiana State University from 2005–2008, and was the tenth administrator of NASA from 2001–2005. He has served as presidential appointee on four separate occasions as Secretary of the Navy, comptroller and CFO of the Defense Department, deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget and deputy assistant to the president, as well as the appointment at NASA under two presidential administrations. He received the Distinguished Public Service Award from President George H.W. Bush and then Defense Secretary Dick Cheney in 1993. His public service began in 1978 upon his selection as a presidential management intern. O’Keefe earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Loyola University New Orleans in 1977 and his Master of Public Administration degree from the Maxwell School of Syracuse University in 1978. He has served as an endowed chair at Syracuse University, a professor of business administration at Pennsylvania State University, a fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration and the International Academy of Astronautics, and member of the Naval Postgraduate School Board of Advisors.
The Rev. Richard P. Salmi, S.J., Ph.D., became the 38th president of Spring Hill College in June 2009. Prior to his appointment at Spring Hill, Salmi served as vice president for student affairs at Loyola University Chicago, a position he held since 2002. In this post, he directed a student affairs division that managed numerous areas in student life, including student activities, residence life, new student orientation, campus recreation, student leadership development and intercollegiate athletics. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Salmi holds a Bachelor of Science degree in communications from Ohio University, a Master of Arts degree in speech communications from Bowling Green State University, a Master of Divinity degree from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley, and a doctorate in higher education administration from Boston College.
The Rev. Stephen Sauer, S.J., Ph.D., is currently pastor of Jesuit Church (Immaculate Conception) in downtown New Orleans. His formal training in liturgical studies began as an undergraduate at Georgetown University, and he began active liturgical ministry in 1975. In the field of theology, Sauer holds a Bachelor of Sacred Theology degree from the Gregorian University in Rome, a Licentiate of Sacred Theology degree from the Institut Catholique of Paris, and a doctorate in sacred theology from The Catholic University of America. Sauer has worked in various pastoral and administrative positions at Spring Hill College, and recently served as a member of the theological studies faculty at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, Calif. A member of the National Pastoral Musicians Association, the North American Academy of Liturgy, and Societas Liturgica, he has presented at conferences and facilitated workshops in parishes across the country.
