Students commit day of service to commemorate Katrina anniversary

Loyola press release - August 30, 2010

First-year students at Loyola University New Orleans went “Into the Streets” Thursday, commemorating the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina with a day of service. The Class of 2014 joined university faculty and staff in community service projects within the greater New Orleans community.

As an example of continued renewal, students, faculty and staff volunteered through a number of organizations, including two home construction organizations, Rebuilding Together and St. Bernard Project; a cemetery and medical center cleanup, Operation Nehemiah; and other volunteer opportunities through ARC of New Orleans and New Orleans Recreation Department.

It always feels good to give back to the community that has given so much to me,” said Niall Doherty, web designer in Loyola’s Office of Institutional Advancement. “I love getting out there, getting my hands dirty, making a difference and meeting countless other Loyola folks who see the value in devoting time to service work.”

“Into the Streets” has become a tradition for new student orientation as a way for incoming students to observe Loyola’s Jesuit ideal of service and bond with future classmates. The day of service aims to bond new students with both the Loyola and New Orleans communities.

“For first year students who have not done this before, this is something they will never forget,” said Sarah Cooper, former SGA president and College of Business senior from Madisonville, La. “Our day of service makes it clear to new students why Loyola is a part of rebuilding New Orleans. It gives them a great appreciation of the work we’re doing and they always seem to get something out of the experience.”

For their participation, each volunteer received lunch and a service day T-shirt.
