Bob Thomas to speak on BP oil spill and media

Loyola press release - August 23, 2010

Bob Thomas, Ph.D., director of the Center for Environmental Communications and Loyola Chair of Environmental Communications, will be a featured speaker at “The Gulf Oil Disaster: Covering What Comes Next,” presented by the Poynter Institute, a school dedicated to the ongoing education of journalists and media leaders. The three-day seminar begins Monday, Aug. 23, and will be held at The Times-Picayune. Loyola’s School of Mass Communication is a co-sponsor of the event.

“It is a very rare opportunity to do this kind of work with Poynter,” Thomas said. “Folks in the field consider them the best in journalism.”

Thomas will be joining other distinguished panelists in discussing the size of the BP oil spill, how it was portrayed in the media and the impact that media coverage has had on Louisiana’s local seafood industry, among other subjects.

He will also host a webinar focusing on how to tell interesting stories by connecting dots that are not apparent to the untrained eye.
