Maroon adviser making news in the ring
Loyola press release - July 26, 2010
With the fall just around the corner, many in the Loyola University New Orleans community are gearing up for the new academic year. Some are wrapping up study abroad trips, while others are fine tuning lesson plans as the campus readies itself for a new freshman class and the mass of returning students.
Maroon adviser and journalism instructor Michael Giusti is spending his final days of the summer throwing punches and receiving a few in return in the boxing ring. As a boxing enthusiast, Giuisti has spent the past five years training and this week he will finally compete in his first sanctioned fight.
Guisti hits the ring this Friday at the Freret Street Gym, just a block off Napoleon Avenue, during its Friday Night Fights event.
“This is a sanctioned USA Boxing amateur bout -- head gear, judges and such. More than anything, it is a reason to work out. I am down 30 pounds from January,” said Giusti . “Nothing motivates you quite like someone punching you in the face.”
Word of his pugilistic debut is already spreading across campus and Giusti expects to see some familiar faces in the crowd when he steps in the ring.
“Quite a few of my students have already told me that they are going to be ringside. I’m sure some faculty and staff are going to be there and I even have been told by some alumni that they plan to attend. Getting hit in the face sure can draw a crowd.”
This is not the first time a member of the Loyola family has stepped into the ring at Friday Night Fights. Loyola President Kevin Wm. Wildes, S.J., Ph.D., started boxing in college and just last year went three rounds against a Tulane University business senior.
So the next logical question has to be whether or not a Giusti -Wildes match is in the making.
“No, no,” Giusti responded. “We joke about it, but USA Boxing regulations won’t allow it to happen. I’m sure I would learn a lot from getting into the ring with him. We might spar each other one day, but as far as a match goes, it’s not going to happen.”
Giusti’s bout is set for Friday, July 30, 7 p.m. at 4510 Freret Street. Admission to the event is $15 and includes unlimited beverages.
