Loyola alumni work to ensure consumption safety of gulf seafood
Loyola press release - July 16, 2010
Loyola University New Orleans chemistry alumni Lauryn Sass Bailey ’02, Sarah Ramadan Ruiz ’05, and Tho Pham ’05, and college of business alumnus Carlos Navarro ’10, are currently working to ensure the safety of gulf seafood consumption at the Eurofins Central Analytical Laboratories facility in Metairie. Bailey, Ruiz and Pham are testing water and seafood samples for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, toxic by-products from crude oils like those which were being emitted from the Deep Water Horizon site. Navarro, who recently received an M.B.A. from Loyola, is working at the lab as a marketing manager.
The Eurofins Central Analytical Laboratories also continues to test samples of water and seafood, such as oysters, fish, shrimp, and crab, for various toxins, including pesticides, veterinary drug residues and heavy metals. Once analyzed, data is submitted to clients including Louisiana state agencies, which detail their findings.
“The results from our tests may be used by our customers or by the local and federal government to decide if particular areas have been impacted and if the seafood products from that area are safe for consumption,” said Bailey.
Bailey, who earned a doctorate in chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is currently the manager of the method development and validation team for trace analysis.
“I work on establishing new methods, analyzing specific compounds in specific products, as well as collecting data to ensure the method is viable. The information is then submitted to accreditation boards, government agencies and customers,” said Bailey. “My projects can vary from week to week and are mostly influenced by customer requests or by current events such as aromatic hydrocarbons in seafood and water samples in response to the oil spill.”
