Loyola hosts 16th annual Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp
Loyola press release - June 25, 2010
The New Orleans Arts and Cultural Host Committee has announced the 16th annual Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp will take place at Loyola University New Orleans July 6 - 23. This is the first year for Loyola to host the camp. World-renowned trombonist Wycliffe Gordon and “Queen of Swing” Norma Miller are headlining the camp and will teach and interact with students.
The jazz camp is currently accepting applications through July 6 for musicians ages 10-21. More information on camp offerings, auditions and fees can be found online at www.louisarmstrongjazzcamp.com.
The Louis Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp was established in 1995 as a way to perpetuate the rich jazz tradition of New Orleans, and has served more than 1,500 young adults. According to Camp Executive Director Jackie Harris, the program focuses mainly on honing musical skills, but also implements a series of character-building exercises.
“Research proves that the discipline and skills required of music education help students manage stress, express their feelings, enhance their memory and improve communication skills,” said Harris. “As this is our first time to relocate the camp, we are extremely excited to have this collaboration with Loyola. Being at Loyola not only gives students the opportunity to study in a state-of-the-art college facility, but it also gives the kids the great feeling of being on an actual college campus.
Camp artist-in-residence Wycliffe Gordon is rapidly becoming one of the world's most persuasive and committed music educators. Currently serving on the jazz faculty at the Manhattan School of Music in New York, his global work with young musicians and audiences is extensive and includes masterclasses, clinics, workshops, children's concerts and lectures. In addition to a thriving solo career, Gordon tours regularly by leading the Wycliffe Gordon Quartet, headlining at legendary jazz venues throughout the world. Gordon is a former member of the Wynton Marsalis Septet and Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra.
Dancer, actress and comedian Norma Miller is a veritable encyclopedia of the swing movement, having witnessed it first hand in the dancehalls of Harlem. She prides herself upon continuing to champion the “Lindy Hop” at the age of 90.
