Associated College Press names The Maroon a First-Class publication

Loyola press release - February 1, 2010

The Associated Collegiate Press named The Maroon a First-Class publication, as part of a voluntary critique and evaluation program. The ACP, the oldest and largest national membership organization for college student journalists, awards student publications annually.

This is the second-highest ranking possible for a college newspaper and places The Maroon in the top 17 percent of all student publications in the nation.

The ACP gave Marks of Distinction to The Maroon in two out of five possible categories, photography and campus leadership. The judges gave numerical rankings in six categories. The Maroon earned 880 points out of a possible 1,090.

Maroon adviser Michael Giusti said he is thrilled with the designation, which was bestowed upon The Maroon for a second year in a row.

“This ranking is an honor, and we appreciate the university's support in helping us in our continued success,” Giusti said.

Editor in Chief Chris Jennings agreed.

“We’re thankful for this prestigious distinction and hope that the university’s continued support will help to improve further the standing of student media and Loyola as a whole,” he said.

Founded in 1923, The Maroon is a community newspaper serving Loyola University New Orleans and housed within the School of Mass Communication. The Maroon has won numerous awards from local, state and national journalism organizations, and former student staffers have gone on to work for organizations such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Times-Picayune and the Associated Press.
