Student Affairs announces promotions of Reed, Beebe

Loyola University New Orleans Director of Residential Life Robert Reed has been promoted to assistant vice president for Student Affairs. Reed, who has served in his current position since 1981, will begin his new role on Aug. 1. The associate director of Residential Education, Craig Beebe, will serve as the department’s interim director for 2009-2010.

As assistant vice president of Student Affairs, Reed will oversee several Office of Student Affairs committees and projects, manage the university student judicial system, supervise emergency preparedness and evacuation team training and procedures, maintain and develop the student handbook and SA policies, among other duties.

As director, Reed developed and implemented major construction, renovation, and remediation of residence halls; created the first Living Learning Communities at the university; created the Loyola Student Cable Network; and initiated and developed the first card access security system at Loyola, which incorporates dining, facility access, bookstore, vending and laundry services for students.

“Reed has years of experience and deeply understands Loyola’s culture and students. He has a great way of solving and resolving issues with students, parents and employees,” said M.L. “Cissy” Petty, Ph.D., vice president for Student Affairs.

Reed came to Loyola from Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology and a master’s degree in counseling. He served there for six years in a variety of capacities, including coordinator of international student affairs, assistant director of residential life and coordinator of residence hall programs.

“I am excited about the opportunity to continue my personal commitment to the members of the Loyola community,” Reed said. “These new challenges afford me the opportunity to continue to enhance collaboration with faculty and staff colleagues while providing a learning environment for each student which supports their total development.”

In his new role as interim director of Residential Life, Beebe will supervise operations and strategic planning for four residence halls, provide training and management of more than 80 staff, develop collaborative programming for resident students and direct evacuation of on-campus students in emergency situations.

Prior to working at Loyola, Beebe managed student residences at Colorado State University and Western State College of Colorado, where he received his master’s and bachelor’s degrees, respectively.

“Beebe comes from very good student affairs programs and brings a lot of ideas and energy,” Petty said. “Plus, his experience at Loyola, learning at the hands of Robert Reed, made him the natural choice.”

“I am excited to see Residential Life continue its development as a critical piece of the student experience at Loyola,” Beebe said. “I hope to continue finding new and innovative ways to address the challenges currently facing Loyola, in particular by emphasizing the role of the residential experience in supporting the academic success and values development of each student.”
