Chef John Besh judges Loyola's Iron Chef competition

Loyola press release - March 30, 2009

Who has what it takes to be king of the kitchen? Student teams from southeastern Louisiana returned to Loyola University to find out at the 2009 Iron Chef competition on Thursday, April 2. The free event was presented by the Loyola Asian Student Organization.

Celebrity chef John Besh returned for a second year as a guest judge for the competition, which took place in the Danna Student Center’s St. Charles Room. Besh, owner of Restaurant August in New Orleans, is a past Food Network Iron Chef competitor and winner of the 2006 James Beard Award for Best Chef of the Southeast. Besh and Loyola’s Executive Chef Marc Main will decide whose cuisine reigns supreme and award the coveted trophy.

Competitors this year included teams from the Loyola Black Student Union, LASO, Loyola Muslim Student Association and Asian organizations from Tulane, Xavier and LSU. Representatives from the Vietnamese-American Young Leaders Association of New Orleans also competed for the Iron Chef title.

The event featured a silent auction and culinary offerings for purchase from HipStix, La Thai, Dong Phuong, China Ruby, 5 Happiness and Mikimoto Sushi. Proceeds raised during the evening will be donated to LASO’s spotlight charity, VietHope. VietHope supports programs and projects that promote the education of Vietnamese children.
