Ellis Marsalis, Leah Chase and Monk Institute students to perform benefit concert at Loyola

Loyola press release - March 2, 2009

Renowned jazz pianist and educator Ellis Marsalis, H'07, and jazz vocalist Leah Chase, M'75, along with students from the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance, will perform at “Jazz for the Ages,” a concert to benefit the Old Algiers RiverFest.

The performance takes place at Loyola University New Orleans on March 11, at 7 p.m., in Roussel Performance Hall, located in the Communications/Music Complex. Advance tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. At the door, tickets will be $15 for adults and $8 for students. Tickets can be purchased online at www.montage.loyno.edu or by calling 504-865-2074.

The Old Algiers RiverFest is a celebration of traditional jazz and the role that the Mississippi River plays in transporting jazz to the world. This year, the festival will be held April 4 and 5 in front of the historic Algiers Courthouse near the ferry landing, and feature top names in traditional jazz, gospel and brass bands, along with arts, crafts, children’s activities and traditional festival fare.

The benefit concert will help defray the costs of the festival, according to Valerie Robinson, the RiverFest chairwoman.

“This is a win-win-win,” said Robinson. “Students get the opportunity to perform with master musicians, the public gets a great show, and RiverFest can use the proceeds to help pay for the costs of the festival.”

For more information about the performance, contact Robinson at 504-362-8813 or email info@oldalgiersmainstreet.com.
