NEA Jazz Master David Baker showcases works at Loyola

Loyola University New Orleans will host an evening of jazz music featuring world-renowned composer, multi-instrumentalist, educator and writer David Baker. The NEA Jazz Master will showcase works from his new big band CD, “Basically Baker.”

Baker, a National Endowment for the Arts American Jazz Masters Award winner, will conduct the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Ensemble, Thelonious Monk Institute/NOCCA Jazz Quintet and Loyola Jazz Band.

The performance takes place Tuesday, Dec. 15 at 7:30 p.m. in Roussel Performance Hall located in Loyola’s Communications/Music Complex. Admission is free and open to the public.

Baker serves as the chair of the jazz studies department at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music and is the conductor and artistic director of the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra. He has more than 2,000 compositions, 500 commissions, 65 recordings and 70 books to his credit.

Among the accolades Baker has received throughout his career include an Emmy Award, Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts’ “Living Jazz Legend Award” for lifetime achievement and The National Association of Jazz Educators Hall of Fame Award.
