Loyola Menís Hoops Assists in Hornets Read to Achieve

Loyola press release - October 27, 2009

For the second consecutive year, the Loyola men’s basketball team assisted the New Orleans Hornets and the Louisiana Children’s Museum to launch the Read to Achieve initiative for the 2009-10 season with the “Run, Read, Leap, Achieve!” literacy event on Tuesday, Oct. 20. Loyola head coach Dr. Michael Giorlando along with assistant coach Joey Stiebing and players Ryan Brock, Darrinton Moncrieffe, and Nick Tuszynski, all participated in the event.

The event included more than 500 third graders from the Recovery School District, Jefferson Parish and St. Bernard Parish schools. The students spent the morning learning about the importance of literacy and education through different stations located inside the Museum and outside in block-party style on Julia St.

Ryan Brock commented on the event, “Personally it was a rewarding experience to make the children smile. You could tell that they were excited to meet us and interact with us. We were able to teach them the importance of reading and education, while still making it fun.”

In addition to the Museum’s exhibits, students also enjoyed creative writing sessions hosted by the Louisiana Department of Education. The New Orleans Public Library distributed library cards and the Hornets Bookmobile, presented by Best Western, handed out a free book to each student. The children were also entertained with interactive games and appearances by Hugo and the Honeybees.

“This is the second year that we have been invited to the Hornets Read to Achieve program. Our student athletes enjoy working with the young students of the metro New Orleans area and understand the importance of being role models for the younger students. We are very proud to be part of this unique event.” said Dr. Giorlando.

Loyola opens the season on Friday, October 30 against Carver Bible. Tip off in The Den is slated for 7 p.m. On Monday, November 9, the Wolfpack will travel across the street in the Annual Battle of Freret Street game against Tulane. The entire University community is invited to attend a pregame Pep Rally located in the Residential Quad starting at 5 p.m. Tip off is slated for 7 p.m. More information can be found at http://alumni.loyno.edu/lutu09.
