Loyola and Southern Rep showcase Beethoven's OPUS 131

Loyola press release - October 19, 2009

The Southern Rep Theater and Loyola University New Orleans will team up next week to present Beethoven’s opus 131 in a benefit performance featuring Loyola’s Faculty Chamber Ensemble.

This event culminates Southern Rep’s run of “OPUS,” an off-Broadway play by Michael Hollinger, and takes place Sunday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m., at the theater, located on the third floor of The Shops at Canal Place.

Tickets are $30 and can be purchased online at www.southernrep.com or by calling 504-522-6545. Proceeds from the event will benefit Southern Rep and Loyola's College of Music and Fine Arts. Wine and hors d'oeuvres will be served.

Loyola’s distinguished Faculty Chamber Ensemble includes faculty members Amy Thiaville, violin; Bruce Owen, viola; and Allen Nisbet, cello. Also featured will be Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra violinist Elizabeth Overweg.

Donald R. Boomgaarden, Ph.D., dean of Loyola’s College of Music and Fine Arts, will give a brief introduction to Beethoven’s op. 131 and describe its unique place in the composer’s repertoire.

Southern Rep opened its season with the regional premiere of off-Broadway triumph, “OPUS.” In the play, violinist turned playwright Hollinger creates a witty and telling portrait of a high-caliber and high-strung string ensemble. The show explores the inner workings of the fictional Lazara Quartet as they are thrown into chaos upon losing a crucial member just days before their televised White House concert. Inspired to tackle Beethoven’s artistically intimidating opus 131, the all-male group’s loyalty is tested when an intriguing young female violinist joins their ranks.
