Loyola athletes encourage elementary students to read
Loyola press release - December 22, 2008
Loyola University New Orleans Men’s Basketball Coach Dr. Michael Giorlando, along with players Nick Tuszynski, a junior from Dallas, Texas, and Darrinton Moncrieffe, a sophomore from Baton Rouge, recently participated in the New Orleans Hornets Read to Achieve assembly at Bethune Elementary School.
The purpose of the program was to stress the importance of education and reading in children’s lives. Coach Giorlando and the players told the students of how their own personal experiences of working hard in school helped shaped their lives.
"It was a wonderful experience to give back to the community. It was heart warming to see professional athletes working with the young children and stressing the importance of education,” Tuszynski said. “The kids really responded to all of us with enthusiasm and willingness to learn."
Prior to the assembly, a bookmobile distributed books to the entire school. The students also received a Read to Achieve Bookmark.
Other guest readers at the assembly included New Orleans Hornet Devin Brown and appearances by Hugo and the Honeybees.
