(New Orleans)—Loyola’s Trenese Smith tied the Wolfpack single game scoring record with 35 points, as Loyola defeated the Belhaven Blazers 82-65 Saturday night in The Den.
Smith is the third person to score 35 in a game. The other two times were in 1996-97 and 1997-98.
Her record-tying performance is featured on the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Web site, where she is ranked 14th in the NAIA in scoring. Smith is averaging 18.1 points per game.
Smith, a sophomore guard/forward from LaPlace, La., scored 35 points in
Loyola's 82-65 victory over Belhaven on Saturday night. She scored 20 points in the first half and converted 13 of 19 field goal attempts. Smith made all four three pointers that she attempted and grabbed a game high nine rebounds.
Also in double digits for Loyola Christine Mainguy had 16 points of 6 of 9 shooting from the field. Smith rounded out the leaders with 12 points. She had a game-high nine assists and played all 40 minutes.
Loyola outscored the Blazers 46-29 in the second half and overcame an early 11 point deficit in the win. “Once again our second half effort pulled us through. Every night is a battle in this league and it is a credit to our team to come out in the second half and take the game. It was a solid win and we’re proud of Trenese and her record tying performance. We look forward to playing William Carey on Thursday night,” said Mary “DoBee” Plaisance, Head Women's Basketball Coach and Loyola Assistant Athletic Director.
Loyola returns to action on Thursday, January 10, against William Carey at 5:30 p.m. in The Den.
