Loyola Jazz Band wins competition, gears up to play Jazz Fest

The Loyola University Jazz Band received the 2007 North Texas Jazz Festival Dr. M.E. "Gene" Hall Award in recognition of the most outstanding university big band at the 2007 North Texas Jazz Festival in Addison, Texas, on March 31. Three of the band members received outstanding soloist certificates as well, including pianist Meghan Swartz, guitarist Andrew Wright, and drummer Ross McIntire. As part of the award, the band was asked to perform on the closing evening concert for the festival, opening for the fabulous Kenny Baron Trio. On their way to the festival, the band performed and recruited at Houston School for the Performing and Visual Arts, Strake Jesuit High, and MacArthur High, all located in Houston.

The Loyola Jazz Band will perform at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival on Saturday, May 5, at 11:20 a.m., at the Sheraton New Orleans Fais Do-Do stage. Professor of Music and Coordinator of Jazz Studies John Mahoney serves as the band's director.
