Loyola remembers two alums

Loyola press release - December 6, 2007

(New Orleans)—Frederick J. Gisevius, Jr., L’37, H’77, former Board of Trustees member, and past president of the Loyola Alumni Association, passed away on Tuesday. He was 94. Carl Lavie, A’51, member of the Loyola basketball Hall of Fame, passed away on Sunday. He was 78.

Gisevius set the benchmark for alumni support and participation for the College of Law. Throughout his distinguished legal career, he was a staunch supporter and friend of Loyola University. Gisevius received the St. Ives Award from the College of Law in 2000. This award is the highest honor from the College of Law Alumni Association and is presented to an alumnus who has volunteered services to the law school or the university, maintained the highest standards of the profession, and furthered the mission of the alumni association. Gisevius also was awarded an honorary doctor of laws degree in 1977, as well as the Adjutor Hominum Award in 1979, given to an outstanding alumnus whose life exemplifies those characteristics that Loyola seeks to form in its graduates, such as integrity, moral character, and service to humanity.

Lavie began his extraordinary Loyola basketball career in 1946 as a member of the Wolfpups after prepping at St. Aloysius High School in New Orleans. He was a three-time letterman with the Wolfpack’s varsity cagers and excelled on the court as one of the squad’s most consistent performers and high-scorers. Lavie was named a member of the All Gulf States Conference team, the New Orleans States Newspaper’s All-Louisiana team, and a Loyola outstanding basketball player by the Forward Club of New Orleans. New Orleans Mayor Chip Morrison designated February 26, 1951, as “Carl Lavie Day” in the city.
