Author and alumna donates history series to Monroe Library

Loyola press release - October 9, 2007

(New Orleans)ŚLoyola University New Orleans alumna, novelist, and historian Mary Lou Widmer has written several books on Louisiana history. In October of this year, she will donate an autographed set of her entire series to the Monroe Library. The set will include the latest installment in the series, New Orleans 1900 to 1920.

Widmerĺs decade-by-decade series of pictorial histories of the city have ranged from the '20s to the '60s. With her most recent volume, she returns to the beginning of the century, following the same format she used for earlier works, applying brief topical chapters accompanied by period illustrations. Widmer also draws historical reference from the experiences of her parents.

According to Susan Larson, The Times-Picayune book editor, ôWidmerĺs sunny nostalgia is affectionate and inclusiveů[the book] is a warm and welcome addition to this series, appealing to the armchair historian and the collector of New Orleans books.ö

In the foreword, former New Orleans mayor Moon Landrieu describes the great appeal of Widmerĺs work, ôMary Lou Widmerĺs personalized style cleverly weaves events, politics, local geography, architecture, and fashion into a tapestry of which her parents and grandparents were a part, and gives us a history worth reading and remembering.ö

Friday, October 19, at the Golden Wolves Reunion, Widmer will sign her new book at a dessert reception in honor of her donation to the Monroe Library.
