Wolfpack women picked first in preseason conference poll

Loyola press release - October 12, 2007

(New Orleans)—The Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC) has ranked the defending conference champion Wolfpack women’s basketball team first in its 2007-08 preseason poll.

The Wolfpack picked up 72 points in the poll to earn the top spot. Xavier came in second with 65 points.

Loyola’s women’s basketball team is coming off the most successful season in program history, setting records in wins (25), winning percentage (.735), and picked up the team’s first conference regular season and tournament championships. Mary “DoBee” Plaisance, head women's basketball coach and assistant athletics Director was named the GCAC Coach of the Year.

Three All-Conference selections return from last season’s squad, including the reigning GCAC player and freshman of the year, Trenese Smith, management sophomore. Smith broke Loyola’s single season records in points scored (599), free throws made (220) and three point field goal percentage (.437). The 220 made free throws was also a GCAC record.

Trenell Smith, management sophomore, returns alongside her twin sister after scoring the fifth most points in a single season (472) in Loyola history. She was named All-GCAC last season.

The last all-conference returnee from a season ago is three-time All-GCAC selection Kiely Schork, communications senior. The senior guard from Burlingame, Calif. could break the Loyola career scoring record this season. She starts 2007-08 trailing Brooke Surette, S’01, by 149 points on the career scoring list. Schork has averaged 373.3 points per season while playing for the Wolfpack, including 177 points scored in the Katrina-shortened 2005-06 season.

Rounding out the top five in the preseason poll following the Wolfpack and the Xavier Gold Nuggets are Mobile, 3rd place, 55 points, LSU-Shreveport 4th place, 48 points, and SUNO 5th place, 44 points.
