Loyola hosts book signing and lecture for Path of Destruction

Loyola press release - August 14, 2006

(New Orleans)-- Loyola University New Orleans and the Garden District Bookshop are hosting a lecture and book signing event on Tuesday, August 22, 2006, from 6 ľ 8 p.m., in Louis J. Roussel Hall. John McQuaid and Mark Schleifstein, distinguished environmental reporter for The Times-Picayune, will give a lecture and sign copies of their newly-released book, Path of Destruction: the Devastation of New Orleans and the Coming of Age of Superstorms.

As rebuilding efforts are underway in New Orleans, an unsettling sense of disbelief and anger still remains. In this new book, McQuaid and Schleifstein cut through the media spins and political finger pointing to offer a comprehensible explanation for the largest natural disaster in American history. Path of Destruction not only explores the storm and its aftermath; it goes further to expose the appalling shortfalls that existed prior to 2005 and the Washington officials who failed to act. The book also includes an explanation for why these massive storms are approaching now.

McQuaid and Schleifstein were co-authors of the Times-Picayune's award-winning series "Washing Away," the definitive account of the Gulf Coast's grave hurricane risks. They were also the lead reporters on a series about global fisheries that won a Pulitzer Prize in 1997. McQuaid is based in Washington D.C. Schleifstein abandoned his Lakeview home in the flood but remains in the New Orleans area.
