(New Orleans)--Members of the White Boot Brigade will be featured on NBC’s “Today Show” on Tuesday, June 20, 2006. The group is a project of marketumbrella.org, run by Loyola University's Twomey Center for Peace Through Justice. The group will be promoting an evening of White Boot Brigade dinners taking place in participating New York restaurants on the evening of June 20, 2006. The trip is an opportunity for Louisiana shrimpers to share stories about the Katrina-ravaged state and form new commercial ties, fitting with the Brigade's mission to initiate and promote the ecology of local economies by developing markets, mobilizing people, mentoring communities, and modeling best practices.
The White Boot Brigade is part of an economic development initiative aimed at creating a commercial fishing industry that promotes economic innovation, cultural preservation, and ecological sustainability. Named after the footwear donned by fishermen in the region, the group is comprised of families that all harvest brown shrimp in the brackish waters of coastal Louisiana during the months of May, June, and July. The unique combination of part salt and part fresh water adds a golden appearance to the shrimp when cooked, alas they are often referred to as "Louisiana Gold."
The group members shared recipes with local restaurants at the Food Network’s test kitchens on May 15, 2006 for those who will prepare dishes using the coastal shrimp for this event. The group will be easy to spot around New York next week, in their white boots, lugging boxes of fresh shrimp directly from their boats to chefs. Paying for rooms at the Carlton Hotel with a currency not usually found on monetary exchanges (Louisiana Gold), they are spreading the news that now is the time to taste Louisiana shrimp. (The manager of the Carlton Hotel is former New Orleanian Edmund Sulzman.) Also while in town, they will be meeting with public policy leaders, food enthusiasts, and decision makers.
