Loyola’s Giorlando Named GCAC Athletic Director of the Year

Loyola Athletic Director and Head Men’s Basketball Coach Michael Giorlando, D.D.S., was named Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Athletic Director of the Year.
Giorlando spearheaded the return of Wolfpack athletics following Hurricane Katrina with the men’s and women’s basketball teams, the only teams in the GCAC to play in New Orleans this season, returning to competition in early January. Also, Loyola’s baseball team completed a full schedule this season.
“Coach Giorlando has done an exceptional job directing our athletic department in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. We welcomed the return of men's and women's basketball on our campus in January and our baseball team played a full season this semester. Athletics provided a sense of normalcy and pride for our students and Coach Giorlando led that charge. It is an honor well deserved,” said the Rev. Kevin Wm. Wildes, S.J., Ph.D., president of Loyola.
Compounding the daunting task of reassembling the athletic department, the Loyola Sports Complex sustained significant damage to the gym floor and athletic offices. In the months after the storm, Giorlando and members of his staff assembled in

I want to thank the LSU Athletic Department for all their help, while we were displaced. I also want to share this with all our coaches and student athletes whose dedication and sacrifice allowed us to bring athletics back post-Katrina,” stated Giorlando.
