Loyola Stages The Winter's Tale

Loyola press release - March 3, 2006

An intriguing and fast-paced comedy-fairy tale will be the spring production of the Loyola Department of Drama and Speech. The Winter’s Tale by William Shakespeare, adapted and directed by Donald Brady will be presented March 17-25 in Marquette Theater.

It is all about resurrection in Post-Katrina New Orleans. Coming in From the Storm, the newly formed Loyola student Shakespeare Company will present The Winter’s Tale. The theater is all about transformations and restoration, and restoration is always about the process. The company will perform this tragedy mixed with comedy, mixed with fairy tale, mixed with allegory. Time is a character, other female characters become male and of course, a bear does a vaudeville turn . . . just for the heaven and hell of it.

One of Shakespeare’s final plays and perhaps the best of his later romances, The Winter’s Tale is a mythical story of renewal and rebirth. The Winter’s Tale is brutal and wildly comic, absolutely absurd, linguistically rich, inspiring and redemptive. From the savage tragedy of jealous Leontes to the festive comedy of Perdita and Florizel, the play combines elements from each dramatic genre with Shakespeare’s most searing poetry. In this imaginative tale of a jealous king, his persecuted queen, and their lost daughter, Shakespeare examines the pride and cruelty of a destructive winter, which is transformed through love and redemption into a joyous spring.

But be forewarned, The Winter's Tale is just that—a fanciful story of miraculous redemption that requires you to suspend your belief system in order to appreciate its magic.

The Winter’s Tale will run March 17, 18, 23, 24, 25 at 8 p.m. and March 19 at 2 p.m. in Marquette Theater, 6363 St. Charles Ave. Tickets are $10 general admission, $5 for students and seniors, Group rates are available. For ticket information, call 865-3824.
