Slow Food USA’s Terra Madre Katrina Relief Fund awarded $30,000 in grants to champion the local food system at the Crescent City Farmers Market (CCFM). The grants were distributed between 12 Gulf Region food producers and restaurant owners whose businesses were heavily affected by Hurricane Katrina.
The Terra Madre Katrina Relief Fund strives to help restore local agriculture heritage that was damaged by Katrina. It is inspired by the message of Terra Madre - the world meeting of food communities, and is now a network of sustainable food producers, chefs and academics from five continents.
The grants were divided among 12 of the fisherman, farmers and restaurateurs, who are a part of the Crescent City Farmers Market. They are:
- Rebel Seafood (specializes in lake and Gulf shrimp, by-catch, blue crab, finfish, catfish, trout, and flounder, selling these at the farmers market)
- The Soft Shell Crab (supplied soft-shelled crab to the CCFM)
- Roko’s Oyster, (supplied oysters to the CCFM.)
- The Roman Candy Man
- Clara and Pete Gerica
- Fair Pop Hill Farm
- Isabel and Miguel Mendez
- Angelo Brocato’s Ice Cream and Confectionary
- Dooky Chase’s
- John Gendusa’s Bakery
- God’s Vineyard
The Crescent City Farmers Market is an endeavor of Loyola’s Economics Institute, whose mission is to initiate and promote ecologically sound economic growth in the greater New Orleans Region.
