Loyola’s Giorlando Named NAIA Region XIII AD of the Year

Loyola press release - October 17, 2006

(New Orleans)–The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) named Loyola Athletic Director and Head Men’s Basketball Coach Dr. Michael Giorlando NAIA Region XIII Athletic Director of the Year.

Giorlando spearheaded the return of Wolfpack athletics following hurricane Katrina with the men’s and women’s basketball teams, the only teams in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference to play in the city of New Orleans last season, returning to competition in early January. Also, Loyola’s baseball team completed a full schedule this season.

"Coach Giorlando has done an exceptional job directing our athletic department in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina. We welcomed the return of men's and women's basketball on our campus in January and our baseball team played a full season in the spring semester. Athletics provided a sense of normalcy and pride for our students and Coach Giorlando led that charge. It is an honor well deserved," said the Rev. Kevin Wm. Wildes, S.J., Ph.D., president of Loyola.

Compounding the daunting task of reassembling the athletic department, the Loyola Sports Complex sustained significant damage to the gym floor and athletic offices. In the months after the storm, Giorlando and members of his staff assembled in Baton Rouge at the LSU Athletic Administration Building. Giorlando implemented a hurricane recovery plan that saw the return of nearly 90% of all student athletes who spent last fall scattered across the nation attending other colleges and universities.

“I am humbled and honored to receive this award from the NAIA. This award goes to all at Loyola who worked tirelessly to get us up and running in January. I want to thank the LSU Athletic Department for all their help, while we were displaced. I also appreciate the confidence and support we received from the Loyola administration that made our return to campus a reality. I share this award with all our coaches and student athletes whose dedication and sacrifice allowed us to bring athletics back post Katrina,” stated Giorlando.

Giorlando was also named GCAC Athletic Director of the Year back in May.
