Loyola Ballet presents its Spring Concert on April 21 & 22

(New Orleans)--Loyola University of New Orleans presents the Loyola Ballet Spring Concert Friday and Saturday, April 21 and 22, 2006 at 8 p.m. in Louis J. Roussel Performance Hall. Tickets are $12 for general admission and $8 for students.

The company will perform the classical ballet Paquita, staged by Laura Zambrano, Loyola Ballet Director, and Gayle Parmelee, Associate Professor Emerita and Coordinator of the Loyola Ballet Preparatory Program, after original choreography by Marius Petipa set to music by Ludwig Minkus. Guest artists Aisha Arechaga and Alexei Dmitrenko, who are performing courtesy of Columbia Classical Ballet, will dance the lead roles. Guest artist Junio Henrique Teixeria, also performing courtesy of Columbia Classical Ballet, will perform the pas de trios with two members of the Loyola Ballet.

The concert also features the premiere of New Orleans-Historical Moments, a tribute to the spirit of New Orleans, choreographed by Miss Parmelee to music by Paul Weston. The first movement depicts the connection of Degas and New Orleans and his paintings of dancers from the Paris Opera. The second movement, danced by Miss Arechaga, is about a casket girl at the Ursuline Convent enjoying the music of the city.

Other works being performed include a tango, Pasion: A Que Precio? This work, choreographed by Cheryl O’Sullivan and Lyle Guidroz to music by Astor Piazolla, features members of Komenka Ethnic Dance Ensemble as well as members of the Loyola Ballet. Time in Motion, an original work choreographed by Loyola University senior Mary Esther Tucker, will also debut at the concert.
