Summer camp fun at Loyola

Loyola University New Orleans announces a schedule of summer camps filled with fun, entertainment, and education.

First, the College of Music offers a Loyola Jazz Band Camp from June 5–11, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The camp is open to 7th through 12th graders, intermediate and above musicians, but only those who focus on the alto, trumpet, trombone, piano, bass, guitar, drums or saxophone. Tuition is $175. An additional $225 for students staying in the campus dormitory. They must be 14 years and older. To achieve balance instrumentation, the number of each instrument will be limited. Loyola Jazz faculty will teach theory, improvisation, combo, big band, private lessons, and master classes as well as faculty demonstrations. A closing concert will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 11 in Nunemaker Auditorium.

The College of Music also will offer a Preparatory Ballet Program from June 6-30. Intermediate and advanced ballet dancing, partnering, and variations will comprise the workshop. Participants should be at least 12 years of age. The program is based on the Vaganova (Russian) technique. Fees not determined.

Second, the Department of Visual Arts will sponsor the Loyola Children’s Summer Art Program 2005. The camp will be divided into two, two-week sessions. Session I runs July 6–16 and Session II from July 18–29. Tuition is $225 for general public and $200 for children of Loyola faculty and staff, including a $50 non-refundable application fee. Refunds will not be given after June 1. The camp runs 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is offered to children 7 to 14 years of age. Painting, drawing, ceramics, printmaking, sculpture, jewelry, and mixed media projects will be offered. Children may attend ONLY one session. A final art exhibition for family and friends will be held. Registration will be held Saturday, April 16, at 10 a.m. in the lobby of the visual arts building, on the corner of Broadway and Dominican streets. No before or after care.

Third, the Loyola Recreational and Sports Complex offers a summer camp June 6 through July 22. The camp is divided into four, two-week sessions and is open to children 5 years through 6th grade. The camp runs from 8:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m., Monday-Friday. Baseball, basketball, karate, floor hockey, recreational games, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, mini-golf, water polo, volleyball and arts and crafts will be offered. All children will receive swimming instruction as well as daily free swim time. Session I runs June 6–June 17, Session II runs June 20–July 1, Session III runs July 5–July 15, and Session IV runs July 18–22. The cost to Sports Complex members is $210 for sessions I, II, $190 for session III, and $105 for session IV. For non-members, the cost is $230 for sessions I, II, $210 for session III, and $115 for session IV. Tuition is due on the Monday prior to the start of the session. Before and after care and lunch are available at an additional fee.
