Loyola alum wins national research award

Karel Sloane, a 2003 magna cum laude Loyola graduate, was awarded the American Art Therapy Association Research Committee Award. This award is granted for her submission ôResearch in Creativity: Comparing Physiological Processes of Art and Language.ö

This original research was an undergraduate project conducted as a partnership between Loyolaĺs Department of Psychology and Tulane Medical Schoolĺs Department of Microbiology and Immunology. The research award was presented November 12 during the 35th annual American Art Therapy Association Conference in San Diego.

This research was the first of its kind. The project analyzed physiological responses related to the art making process and compared them to verbal activities.

Sloane is a multi-media abstract expressionist with work currently on display in New Orleans, Miami, and New Haven, Conn. She also will be in a group show in New Orleans at the Ashe Culture Center from January 2-10, 2005. In 2003, Sloan was featured in the USA Today newspaper as one of the All-USA College Academic Team Honorable Mentions.
