Loyola press release - January 13, 2004

New Orleans)—Loyola University New Orleans and officials of the George J. Mitchell Scholars committee announced that Brandon Thibodeaux, a Loyola senior and Erath, La. native, was selected as a Mitchell Scholar for 2004-2005.

Thibodeaux was one of 12 selected from 245 applicants from 166 colleges and universities in a nationwide competition for a year of post-graduate study at universities in Ireland and Northern Ireland. He will graduate from Loyola University this spring and will study for a master’s degree in peace and conflict studies at the University of Ulster. He is the first Loyola student to receive the Mitchell award.

The Mitchell Scholarships recognize outstanding young Americans who exhibit the highest standards of academic excellence, leadership and community service. The scholarships are administered by the U.S.-Ireland Alliance, a non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C., is named to honor of the pivotal leadership role by the former U.S. Senator in the Northern Ireland peace process.

The Mitchell Scholarship program was inaugurated in 1998 with an endowment established by the government of Ireland. Other significant financial support is provided by the Northern Ireland Executive and the U.S. Department of State. USIT, an Irish student travel organization, provides a travel stipend to each scholar. Universities in Ireland and Northern Ireland furnish housing and tuition to the Mitchell scholars.

Thibodeaux has received many scholarly awards while a student at Loyola. He is the national recipient of the Una Chapman Cox fellowship for foreign services and was a semi-finalist for the highly competitive National Truman scholarship and the Pamela Harriman fellowship. The Cox award defrayed the costs of living abroad as he served as an economic ambassador for the U.S. Embassy in Paris last summer. He is the son of Rudy and Diana Thibodeaux of Henry, La.
