Video journalist for the Voice of America Margaret Kennedy was embedded with naval forces during the war in Iraq and returned following the declaration of the end of hostilities in May. She will share stories in a talk titled “Covering Iraq: a Voice of America Journalist’s View of the War and After” on Tuesday, September 23 at 7 p.m. in the Nunemaker Auditorium in Monroe Hall on Loyola’s main campus, 6363 St. Charles Ave.

Kennedy, who has been with Voices of America for more than a decade, was one of 700 “embedded” journalists from around the world with the U.S. military during the Iraq War in March and April. She spent several weeks reporting for VOA radio and television from the aircraft carrier Constellation in the Persian Gulf, the hospital ship Comfort, and from the Central Command in Bahrain. In May and June, she reported on the reconstruction efforts in Iraq from Baghdad and Basra.

Kennedy has participated in training VOA video journalists in the U.S., Asia and Europe, and taught video journalism in Central America and Africa under United Nations and U.S. State Department sponsored programs. She is currently involved in integrating field video editing into VOA-TV’s production system. She has both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in journalism from the University of Florida.

VOA is under the direction of the International Broadcasting Bureau and funded by the U.S. government. It is one of the world’s largest international, multi-lingual news organizations, broadcasting in 56 languages.
