Loyola 2003 Bateman team wins national pr competition

(New Orleans)—The 2003 Bateman team from Loyola University has again won the annual national competition sponsored by the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA). The team traveled to Somerset, New Jersey, May 2 to compete in the final round.

Loyola teams are always strong competitors in the Bateman competition. Loyola teams won the national competition in 1997 and 2000. This is the fourth consecutive year that the teams have finished as one of the top three entries.

The team presented its campaign to judges from the PRSSA and the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) and to this year’s client, Ferraro U.S.A., the manufacturer of Nutella, a chocolate and hazelnut spread. Nutella was created in Italy during the 1940s and outsells all brands of peanut butter worldwide.

Team members are Liz Bearce, from North Falmouth, Mass.; Laura Burris, Richardson, Texas; Uyen Phan, Waggaman, La.; Kathryn Sharp, Houston, Texas; and, Katherine Staiano, Metairie, La. All team members are communications majors. Phan is a junior and the other team members are seniors. Cathy Rogers, associate professor of communications at Loyola, is the faculty advisor.

The Bateman contest is considered by many to be the most challenging and prestigious national competition for public relations students. The competition was established by the PRSSA to allow members an opportunity to exercise the analytical skills and mature judgment required for public relations problem solving.

Sixty-five universities submitted entries for the competition last fall, an increase of about twenty additional schools over last year’s number. The other two national finalists for 2003 are the University of Florida, in Gainsville and the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City.
