Loyola University College Of Music Dedicates New Multi-Media Training Center As Part Of Its Music Business Program

(New Orleans)—New developments in Loyola University New Orleans’ Music Business Program will be announced by Rev. Bernard P. Knoth, S.J., university president; Edward Kvet, dean of the College of Music; and Ernest Collins, executive director of Arts & Entertainment for the City of New Orleans at a news conference on Thursday, March 13, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. in the new Multi-Media Training Center located on the first floor of the J. Edgar and Louise S. Monroe Library.

Loyola University New Orleans is pleased to announce that the university was recently awarded grants from the State of Louisiana, the Gheens Foundation, and the Goldring Foundation to equip a state-of-the-art multi-media training center. Additional in-kind gifts were received from the Yamaha Corporation of America and Digidesign, Inc. This facility, which is housed in Loyola’s J. Edgar and Louise S. Monroe Library, includes an impressive array of instructional technology for use in audio and video recording and production. The center includes over 30 computer workstations with the latest software for music production, music training, web design, digital graphics, video rendering and desktop publishing. The facility will be distinguished among a very few institutions in North America developing digital media education. Loyola students in music, visual arts and communications will benefit from the latest technology and training, thus becoming some of the best-prepared graduates entering the music and entertainment industries in this region and the entire United States.

New Orleans is entering a new era of opportunity in the local music industry. The promise of significant economic development is at hand with the formation of Arts and Entertainment Clusters at the State Department of Economic Development and Metrovision, as well as the new Office of Music Business Development in the Mayor’s Office. The goals of these economic development initiatives are the support of existing music businesses, development of community-based programs, and the assistance of educational institutions that build a trained infrastructure for the future of the music and entertainment industries.

Loyola has followed suit with the development of an innovative Music Business Program, whose mission includes the same goals stated above. With the development of a specialized curriculum came the need to establish a modern multi-media facility that gives students access to the latest technology in audio and video recording and production. The Music Business Program currently has 125 majors with an additional 200 music majors who will use the training center for other areas of music training.

"Through generous gifts from our donors, we are now able to provide state-of-the-art multi-media training to our students in the preeminent Macintosh computer lab in the state, if not the entire Gulf South," said Dean Edward Kvet.
