Loyola press release - November 17, 2003

(New Orleans)—Loyola University assistant professor of communications Sherry Lee Alexander will present the speakers at an open forum held by the Louisiana Coalition for Open Government (LaCOG) on Monday, December 1, 2003, from 9:30 a.m. – noon. This forum will be held in the Frederick Gisevius Moot Court Room 308 at the Loyola School of Law, 526 Pine Street. The topic is “Access to Government in Louisiana Since 9/11/01.”

Loyola School of Law Dean Brian Bromberger will welcome the group and Ken DeJean, Office of the Attorney General, will discuss access to government records and proceedings in Louisiana. LaCOG board member Mary Ellen Roy, Phelps Dunbar, will discuss access to judicial records and proceedings in Louisiana and LaCOG president Linda Lightfoot of the Baton Rouge Advocate will talk about access in the Louisiana legislature. LaCOG Board Member Clancy DuBos, Gambit Communications and Berrigan Litchfield, will moderate a question and answer period.

Sponsors of the forum in addition to LaCOG and Loyola School of Law include the Office of the Attorney General, Loyola University Communications Department, the New Orleans Bar Association, Gambit Weekly, the Baton Rouge Advocate, the Louisiana Press Association, and the Loyola Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

LaCOG is made up of citizen organizations and media entities. It was formed to educate the public about Louisiana’s sunshine laws and to preserve and strengthen those laws. State and federal sunshine laws require most regulatory meetings and decisions to be made available to the public. The Office of the Attorney General for the State of Louisiana is charged with overseeing the enforcement of open meetings and public records laws in the state.

For more information about the forum, contact Sherry Lee Alexander, 865-3292 or Clancy DuBos, 568-0541.
