Author Beverly Lowry to speak November 12

(New Orleans)ŚThe Loyola University New Orleans Womenĺs Resource Center is hosting a lecture/ reading/ booksigning by Beverly Lowry, author of a recently published biography of Madame C. J. Walker, titled Writing a Life, Seeking to Know the Heart of Another. The event will be on Wednesday, November 12, at 7 p.m., in the Audubon Room in the Danna Center. The event is free and the public is invited.

Lowry, a native of Greenville, Miss., has written both fiction and non-fiction. She published the non-fiction book, Crossed Over: A Murder, A Memoir in 1992. This book is the story of Karla Faye Tucker, a convicted murderer on death row in Texas, the death of Lowryĺs son and the friendship between Lowry and Tucker. Earlier this year the biography of Madame Walker was published, after having been in the works for more than ten years. The book is as much a biography of the first black woman millionaire as it is an exploration of the racial and cultural history of the American South.

Her many novels include Daddyĺs Girl, Emma Blue and Come Back, Lolly Ray. Her short stories have appeared in the Boston Globe, the Mississippi Review, Redbook, Houston City Magazine and the Texan Humanist. Lowryĺs essays, profiles, and book reviews have been published in the New Yorker, the New York Times, Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone Magazine, Granta and many other journals.
