Loyola press release - January 15, 2003

(New Orleans)ŚLoyola University College of Music presents its annual opera production, Mozartĺs Cosý fan tutte on Friday, January 24 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, January 26 at 3 p.m. in the Louis J. Roussel Performance Hall, on the second floor of the Communications/Music Complex located at the corner of Calhoun Street and St. Charles Avenue.

The fully-staged production will be directed by David Morelock and the music will be conducted by Carol Rausch. The production will include a professional orchestra, chorus, staging, make-up, and costumes.

Tickets are $20 for general admission and $10 for students. For ticket information, call the College of Music box office at 865-3492.

Morelock was able to draw upon the wealth of vocal talent at Loyola to fill the lead roles. In some cases, certain roles were double-cast to offer performance opportunities to as many students as possible (one student on Friday and the other on Sunday). Student cast members include: Brianne Burgess and Angela Mannino as Despina, Angela Marchese and Kristen Bauer as Fiordiligi, Lisa LaFleur and Brandy Hawkins as Dorabella, Mason Joy and Matt Woodward as Guglielmo, and Oscar Nieves as Fernando. As with past productions of Loyola operas, the student cast will be augmented by graduates from the College of Music, including Francis Courtenay as Don Alfonso and Terrell Perrier as Fernando.

The opera takes place in 18th-century Naples, where two young officers are dining with an older, more experienced friend who declares that, though he loves them, women can not be faithful. The young men are certain that their fiancÚes, two sisters, will always be true. The older man proposes a bet that the girls' affections can be swayed, and the soldiers readily agree to it. They promise to follow all instructions. The conditions of the bet are these: the officers are to tell their sweethearts that they have been called to the front, then they are to return disguised as suitors from Albania. The ladies' chambermaid, Despina, is hired to help facilitate the plot, and to talk the ladies into considering taking new lovers. All ends well with all parties somewhat the wiser about love.
