Loyola University New Orleans School of Law International Programs presents a public address by Justice David A.O. Edward of the European Court of Justice

(New Orleans)—The School of Law presents the Bernard Ward Jurist in Residence Justice David A.O. Edward of the European Court of Justice in a public lecture titled "Notions of Federalism in Europe and America: Why Does Europe Attach More Importance to Legal Harmonisation than the United States?" on Thursday, April 4, at 4 p.m. with comments by European lawyers Sandra Keegan and Ian Forrester. The lecture will be held in the Gisevius Moot Court Room 308 of the law school.

Justice David Edward was appointed to the European Court of Justice in 1992, following judicial service on the European Court of First Instance. He was educated at the University of Edinburgh and Oxford, prior to qualification as an advocate and Queen's Counsel in Scotland. He has served as Salvesen Professor of European Institutions and Director of the Europa Institute, University of Edinburgh, President of the Consultative Committee of the Bars and Law Societies of the European Community, and Special Advisor to the House of Lords Select Committee on the European Communities. Justice Edward publishes and speaks widely on European Union law and related topics.

Sandra Keegan, Lą79, is currently the Head of Sector for Legal Issues and Policy Coordination for the European Commission in Brussels within the unit in the Directorate General Information Society dealing with regulatory policy. She has also worked in the European Commission services dealing with legislative harmonisation of European patent law, bilateral relations for Financial Services and direct enforcement of the relevant Treaty provisions on "free movement of goods."

Ian Forrester is a partner with the international law firm White & Case as well as Queen's Counsel in the UK, professor in European Law at the University of Glasgow, and member of the bars of Scotland, New York, and England. Forrester has represented major clients in the European national courts and the European Court of Justice.

The lecture is co-sponsored by the International Law Section of the Louisiana Bar Association and the World Trade Center of New Orleans.
