Loyola Law Alumni Association Hosts Annual Luncheon
Loyola press release - December 20, 2002
(New Orleans)—The Law Alumni Association of Loyola University New Orleans will hold its annual Law Alumni Luncheon on Friday, January 10, 2003, at the Sheraton New Orleans Hotel in the Waterbury Ballroom. The reception will begin at 11 a.m. followed by the luncheon at noon.
The late Wendell H. Gauthier is the recipient of the 2003 St. Ives Award, presented at the annual luncheon. The award, named after the patron saint of lawyers, is presented annually to a Loyola School of Law graduate who has volunteered services to the law school or the university, maintained the highest standards of the profession, and furthered the mission of the alumni association.
Gauthier, a 1970 graduate of Loyola’s School of Law and a nationally known lawyer, died on December 11, 2001. He spent his career helping victims of industrial disasters. During his long career, he faced industrial giants such as Shell Oil, Pan American, and Continental Grain. His greatest achievement was his battle against big tobacco companies. Gauthier and a team of other lawyers succeeded in getting five of the nation’s tobacco companies to agree to pay $206 billion to 48 states by the year 2025. This money will be used to pay for the expenses of treating people with health problems due to nicotine and the treatment of those wishing to quit smoking due to the addictive nature of nicotine.
The luncheon is open to the public; tickets are $38 a person and $375 for a table of ten.
