Social activist Father Roy Bourgeois speaks at Loyola University New Orleans School of Law

Loyola press release - September 26, 2001

(New Orleans)ŚThe outspoken critic of the School of the Americas, the Rev. Roy Bourgeois, will be at the Loyola University New Orleans School of Law to discuss his opposition to the school in Fort Benning, Ga. Although the school has undergone a name change and reportedly an image change, Bourgeois will reiterate his demand for the schoolĺs closing.

The discussion will be held Tuesday, October 16, from 7-9 p.m. in the Gisevius Moot Court Room 308 of the law school, 504 Pine St.

Bourgeois, a Vietnam War veteran, has lead countless protest against what he says is the schoolĺs legacy of human rights violations in Latin America. His activities have lead to repeat arrests and nearly four years in prison. In January, the School of the Americas name was changed to the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation. The school trains Latin American soldiers in combat.
