Loyola press release - August 1, 2001

(New Orleans)—For the second year in a row, the Twomey Center for Peace through Justice’s Resolving Conflict Creatively Program sponsors a Social Emotional Learning Conference on Loyola’s campus.

The conference begins at 8:30 a.m. Thursday August 9, and concludes at noon on Saturday, August 11. All sessions are free and will be held in Monroe Hall Room 222. The conference is open to teachers, parents, guidance counselors, school aids, paraprofessionals, school safety personnel, and family workers. A continental breakfast, lunch and workshop materials will be provided for participants.

The national Resolving Conflict Creatively Program began in 1985 to promote effective instruction in conflict resolution and intercultural understanding through partnerships with N.O. public schools. The New Orleans program began in 1991 and is housed at Twomey. In addition to effective conflict resolution, objectives of the local program include promoting bias awareness and appreciation for all cultures and individuals, and developing students’ emotional intelligence by teaching them problem-solving and critical thinking skills.

The conference highlights include: Introduction to Conflict Resolution, Staff Development, Strategic Management, Infusion of Conflict Resolution, Peer Mediation, Children Literature and Puppetry Quantum Flow of Meditation.

Twomey Director Ted Quant will be among 11 local and national experts in the field of education and conflict resolution to facilitate conference sessions. With combined experience of over 100 years, these facilitators will provide the latest and most innovative methods for everything ranging from anger management to building self-respect to effective meditation.
