College of Music to host jazz clinic on Sept. 26

The College of Music will host a jazz clinic with bassist David Friesen and guitarist Sid Jacobs. The clinicians on are a university tour sponsored by Thomastik-Infeld String Company. The clinic is set for Tuesday, September 26 at 12:30 p.m. in Room 240 of the Communications/Music Complex. Admission is free and open to all.
Sid Jacobs is an accomplished author, clinician, recording artist and music instructor. He has taught at the Guitar Institute of Technology (GIT), the Dick grove School and the University of Nevada at Las Vegas. He has performed with Eddie Harris, Joe Dorio, Buddy Montgomery, and Harold Land. Jacobs has contributed to Guitar Player magazine and his Complete Book of Jazz Guitar lines and Phrases (book and CD - MelBay Publications) is considered to be a thorough exploration of the modern jazz vocabulary.
David Friesen has long been the outstanding bassist with a talent for adapting himself to different styles of jazz. He has played with the likes of Ted Curson, Billy Harper, Duke Jordan, Joe Henderson, George Adams, John Stowell, Mal Waldron, Paul Hom, Airto Moreira, Uwe Kropinski and Denny Zeitlin, to name a few. Stylistically, David's playing and composing is both sensitive and articulate. He has played a vast array of genres as well, ranging from free jazz to improvisational to contemporary jazz. He has gone full circle back to his straight ahead roots to record 1,2,3, considered to be one of his best recordings.
