National journalist presents multimedia event at Loyola University New Orleans

Loyola press release - September 11, 1998

(New Orleans)ŚPhiladelphia journalist Allen Houghland presents "Mumia Abu-Jamal: A Prisoner on Death Row," a multimedia presentation on October 6, 1998 at 7:30 p.m. in Nunemaker Hall on Loyolaĺs main campus, 6363 St. Charles Ave.

Mumia Abu-Jamal was sentenced to death in June of 1995 for the shooting death of a Philadelphia policeman. He has held to the statement that he was framed and has appealed the decision stating that he did not receive a fair trial. He was granted an indefinite stay of execution a few days before his scheduled date of execution in August 1995. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court will rule on Abu-Jamalĺs appeal some time this year. Its decision will either give Mumia Abu-Jamal a new trial or a new execution date.

Houghland has written extensively about Mumia Abu-Jamal and his belief that Abu-Jamal did not receive a fair trial. In early 1995, Houghland interviewed Abu-Jamal at the Pennsylvaniaĺs super maximum SCI Greene Prison. Houghland brings the context of that interview and the issues that the case raises through a multimedia presentation, including Abu-Jamalĺs discussion of the FBI, the death penalty, race, society and the law.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call University Programming Board at (504) 865-2131.
