Friday: Father's Day event celebrates 40 New Orleans role-model dads

Loyola press release - June 9, 2014

The Lindy Boggs National Center for Community Literacy at Loyola University New Orleans and the New Orleans Fatherhood Consortium will showcase role-model fathers who are making vital contributions as parents and men in the community at the Fifth Annual Favorite Fathers Celebration, “Taking Back our Fathers” Friday, June 13. The event is also co-sponsored by the Ashe’ Cultural Arts Center.

“Taking Back our Fathers” takes place from 7 to 9 p.m. at Landry-Walker High School located at 1200 L.B. Landry Ave. in New Orleans. Advance tickets are available for $20 online or by calling 504-569-9070. Admission at the door is $25 or $10 with student ID. The evening will also include a performance of “Taken,” a choreographic work inspired by the historical epidemic of absentee fathers in African-American families and communities.

The theme this year is 40 fathers under 40, honoring 40 men under the age of 40 who are making a difference in the lives of women, children, families and communities across New Orleans. The event will celebrate fathers for overcoming challenges to contribute not only to their families, but also to thousands of young men in the city desperately needing a role model. Nominations for fathers are still being accepted.

The mission of the New Orleans Fatherhood Consortium is to develop comprehensive social supports, programs, public awareness and policies that assist fathers in reaching their fullest potential.

The Boggs Center at Loyola was instrumental in the formation of the New Orleans Fatherhood Consortium in 2007. The Boggs Center actively supports the work of the community-based practitioners to enhance adult literacy, as well as the efforts of university-based educators to connect thought to action and theory to practice.
