Montage Series features free clarinet, viola recitals
Loyola press release - September 3, 2013
Loyola University New Orleans’ Montage Fine and Performing Arts Series gets into full-swing in September with two free recitals in the Louis J. Roussel Performance Hall, located in the Communications/Music Complex on the corner of St. Charles Avenue and Calhoun Street. Both events begin at 7:30 p.m. and are open to the public.
On Monday, Sept. 9, Loyola clarinet instructor Stephanie Thompson will present “80s Night,” a program of clarinet and piano music connected to the 1980s, including works by Robert Muczynski, Sergei Prokofiev and George Gershwin. College of Music and Fine Arts accompanist and vocal coach Yui Asano will accompany Thompson on piano.
Thompson is a member of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra and currently serves as orchestra president. Prior to her position in New Orleans, she performed with numerous orchestras in the United States and Canada and spent a season with the Sarasota Opera Company. Asano, one of the most in-demand pianists in the New Orleans area, frequently collaborates with musicians of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. She is also a member of the chamber music groups Musaica and the Windsor Court Trio.
Taiwanese violist Hsiaopei Lee and New Zealand pianist Joohae Kim will offer a recital Tuesday, Sept. 10. The program will include Rebecca Clarke’s “Passacaglia on an Old English Tune,” York Bowen’s “Viola Sonata in C Minor,” Hans Sitt’s “Album Leaves, Op. 39” and Arthur Benjamin’s “Jamaican Rumba” as arranged by William Primrose.
Lee is an associate professor of viola at the University of Southern Mississippi and has performed extensively throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. She regularly plays with the Mississippi Chamber Circle and the Impromptu Piano Quartet. Her first CD, “Viola Music Written by American Female Composers,” will be released this year. Kim, an award-winning pianist, is a collaborative faculty artist at USM.
Free parking for both events is available in the West Road Garage, accessible from St. Charles Avenue.
