Loyola press release - July 22, 2013
Student athletes at Loyola University New Orleans are not only recognized for their success on the playing field, but also for their success in the classroom. Wolf Pack Athletics earned academic honors this year as 11 teams recently received the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Scholar-Team award. A total of 898 programs in the NAIA were recognized this year.
For a team to be considered for the NAIA Scholar-Team award, it must have a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. The team GPA includes all eligible varsity student athletes.
“First, I would like to congratulate all of our teams for their hard work in the classroom,” said Dr. Michael Giorlando, head men’s basketball coach and director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Wellness at Loyola. “We are extremely proud of those programs that have been recognized as NAIA Scholar-Teams for outstanding academic achievement. This is also a testament to our coaches who place a premium in recruiting true student-athletes and value the university’s mission of educating the whole person.”
Andy Canegitta’s women’s cross country team produced the highest mark for Loyola, finishing with a 3.52 combined GPA. The men’s cross country squad followed closely with a 3.34 GPA. Additional teams earning recognition under the direction of Canegitta, include women’s outdoor track with a 3.28 GPA, women’s indoor track with a 3.26 GPA, men’s indoor track with a 3.08 GPA and men’s outdoor track with a 3.07 GPA.
