Tennis stars capture year-end awards

Loyola University New Orleans men’s and women’s tennis teams captured year-end awards presented by the Southern States Athletic Conference.

Freshman Tarun Surat was named to the first team All-Conference as well as Freshman of the Year after a spectacular first season. He was named the team’s Champions of Character award-winner as well. The Hyderabad, India native burst onto the collegiate scene by going 13-3 in singles this season while playing exclusively at the No. 1 position. He also went 8-8 in doubles matches while teaming with Jaron Belcher for 15 of the 16 matches.

Sophomore Meghan de Baroncelli also captured a Champions of Character award as she went 8-8 in singles matches at the top position. She stepped up her play after tallying seven wins as a true freshman. The New Orleans native finished the season 6-10 in doubles matches while playing 15 of the 16 matches with senior Frances Bonnin.

The Wolf Pack also had three players named to the SSAC All-Academic team. Chelsea Keene, Cristiana Krtalic and Joshua Laviolette all received the honors. Keene is a junior out of Tallulah, Louisiana, who earned four doubles victories and two singles victories this season. Krtalic is a junior from New York, New York, who posted two doubles victories and a singles victory this season. Laviolette is a senior New Orleans native who recorded three singles victories and six doubles victories this campaign.
