Students explore 'Islamaphobia' at annual peace conference
Loyola press release - April 8, 2013
Loyola University New Orleans students are putting on the annual Student Peace Conference April 8-12, hosting a series of interactive lectures, concerts, dances, film screenings and more designed to keep the community talking about hope, renewal and global peace. Events ranging from a panel discussion on “Islamaphobia” to an International Dance Night featuring Afro-Brazilian, Indian, Middle Eastern, Persian, Polynesian, Russian Gypsy and Tahitian dances, aim to promote peace and understanding.
The panel on “Islamaphobia,” hosted by the Loyola Society for Civil Engagement, is set for Thursday, April 11 from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. in the Audubon Room located in the Danna Student Center. Junior theatre arts major Gabrielle Landry, junior political science major Jacqueline Joseph and freshman theatre arts major Akeem Biggs, will lead the International Dance Night that evening in Nunemaker Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. A complete schedule of the week’s events is available online.
This year’s Student Peace Conference also features a weeklong origami project with the J. Edgar and Louise S. Monroe Library. The Loyola community will recycle the library’s paper to make 1,000 origami cranes to promote awareness of environmental issues.
The conference will culminate in a concert showcasing Loyola musicians in the Peace Quad Friday, April 12 from 3 to 6 p.m. Sigma Alpha Kappa will host a crawfish boil alongside the concert stage.
The Student Peace Conference is made possible by the participation and support of the University Honors Program, the College of Humanities and Natural Sciences, the Women’s Resource Center, the Department of Theatre Arts and Dance, the College of Music and Fine Arts, the Student Advocates for Gender Equality, the Loyola Society for Civic Engagement, Loyola’s design association chapter of AIGA, the Affirmative Action and Diversity Committee, Sigma Alpha Kappa and the Middle East Peace Studies Interdisciplinary minor.
