Blood drive to help Loyola instructor's daughter, Children's Hospital
Loyola press release - November 12, 2012
The holidays are right around the corner, and as the spirit of the season blooms, faculty, staff and students at Loyola University New Orleans have united to organize a campus-wide blood drive to benefit the daughter of alumnus and music finance instructor Jude Boudreaux '00. The drive will take place Monday, Dec. 3 from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. in the St. Charles Room of the Danna Student Center.
In September, 2-year-old Lucy Boudreaux was diagnosed with leukemia and is currently being treated at Children’s Hospital New Orleans. Characterized by an abnormal increase of immature white blood cells, leukemia is a type of blood cancer that affects more than 1,100 children currently in treatment at the hospital. With treatment lasting up to two years, blood transfusions and chemotherapy are vital facets of ongoing disease management.
Organizers hope to receive 150 donations at the event, and although the drive is on behalf of Boudreaux, all of the children at the hospital will benefit. In 2011, patients at Children’s Hospital needed more than 15,000 blood components.
Donors must be in good health, at least 17 years old and weigh a minimum of 110 pounds. With parental permission, 16-year-olds who weigh at least 130 pounds may also donate. A picture ID is required. For more information, visit www.thebloodcenter.org.
Donors are asked to sign up by Wednesday, Nov. 28, but people will be able to donate blood without advanced registration. For more information, contact Kristen Jones at 504-865-3984 or firstname.lastname@example.org. Anyone unable to donate can contact Suzy Potter at 504-939-9609 or email@example.com for additional options.
This event is sponsored by the Colleges of Music and Fine Arts, Social Sciences, Humanities and Natural Sciences, Law and Business, as well as the School of Nursing and the Shawn M. Donnelley Center for Nonprofit Communications.
