Yo-Yo Ma gives cello masterclass at Loyola

Loyola press release - October 31, 2012

The Montage Fine and Performing Arts Series at Loyola University New Orleans hosted the world-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma in a masterclass on Saturday, Oct. 27. Regarded by many as the most famous cellist of his time, Ma is acclaimed across the globe for his virtuosic work as a musician and composer. The Grammy Award winner maintains a balance between his engagements as a soloist with orchestras throughout the world, his recital and chamber music activities, and his work with the Silk Road Project, for which he serves as artistic director.

Ma, who is widely recognized for his strong commitment to educational programs, was the recipient of the National Medal of Arts in 2001 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011. Ma performed the “Elgar Cello Concerto” with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra at the Mahalia Jackson Theater Oct. 26.

This event was part of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra Masterclass Series at Loyola, which features a wide range of world-renowned musicians, including Christopher Martin on trumpet, Jay Friedman on trombone, Stephen Hough on piano, Jose Franch-Ballester on clarinet and Roberto Diaz on viola.

“The LPO is thrilled to partner with Loyola to provide a masterclass series for the next generation of orchestral musicians to learn from today's most talented soloists,” said James William Boyd, interim managing director for the LPO. “This is just another example of the LPO's focus on fostering collaborations with cultural and educational institutions across the state in order to make orchestral music a part of the lives of all Louisianans."

Loyola’s College of Music and Fine Arts has a vast music program, with more than 500 undergraduate majors in the School of Music and Department of Music Industry Studies.
