JSRI hosts 2012 election lecture

Loyola press release - September 24, 2012

In anticipation of this year’s presidential election, the Jesuit Social Research Institute at Loyola University New Orleans will host “Election 2012: With Liberty and Justice for Some? Race, Poverty, and Catholic Social Thought,” on Wednesday, Sept. 26, from 7-8:15 p.m. in the Audubon Room, located on the second floor of the Danna Student Center. The event is free and open to the public and part of the Biever Guest Lecture Series at Loyola.

The lecture will emphasize the upcoming election and the challenge of promoting inclusive justice during a time of polarized public discourse. Keynote speaker, the Rev. Bryan N. Massingale, Marquette University professor of theology and past-president of the Catholic Theological Society of America, will explore the intersections of race, religion and politics. He will also look specifically at how the overlapping realities of racism and poverty continue to undermine our common life and the common good. Massingale specializes in social ethics and teaches courses on Catholic social thought, African American religious ethics, liberation theologies and racial justice.

Panelists will include Loyola faculty Peter Burns, Ph.D., political science professor, and María Pabón López, J.D., dean of the College of Law.

“Fr. Massingale is a wise and prophetic voice in the United States today,” said JSRI research fellow Alex Mikulich. “Students, faculty and the broader community can expect a provocative and insightful presentation of the social justice issues at stake in the upcoming presidential election.”
