Loyola welcomes back students, celebrates centennial with a fais do-do
Loyola press release - September 10, 2012
The Loyola University New Orleans centennial celebration continues into the new academic year with a Welcome Back Fais Do-Do open to all faculty, staff and students on Thursday, Sept. 13 from 12:30 – 2 p.m. Rescheduled to follow the Mass of the Holy Spirit, the Fais Do-Do will be held in the West Road Garage turnaround area, which will be closed to parking that day for the event.
The fais do-do, a term for a Cajun dance party, is the university’s unique way of welcoming everyone back for the new school year while celebrating south Louisiana’s rich Cajun heritage and continuing Loyola’s year-long centennial festivities.
Jambalaya, cornbread and Abita root beer will be served while partygoers stomp their feet to the sounds of the Tout Les Soir Cajun Band or try their hand at the Cajun two-step and other dances led by two professional dance couples.
To showcase the importance of the wetlands to Louisiana’s heritage and culture, representatives from the Audubon Nature Institute’s Wetland Express will be on site to offer an up close experience with the wetlands’ most important inhabitants - the animals. Attendees will see and learn about various wildlife species that depend on the wetlands for their homes, meals and nurseries. In hopes of fostering future stewardship of this most important resource, a Gulf Restoration Network representative will also be present to provide information on how the loss of wetlands leads to declining water quality, loss of wildlife and fish habitats, and increased vulnerability to hurricanes and flooding. For those who would like to plan a trip to the real “Cajun Country,” Lafourche Parish representatives will provide information about visiting nearby Bayou Lafourche.
The Welcome Back Fais Do-Do is sponsored by the Offices of Public Affairs and External Relations and Co-Curricular Programs. For more information, please contact Angela Turnbull at (504) 861-5848 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
